As part of Social Studies, we are keeping up with current events through Scholastic News.  Here are photos of third graders playing the Know the News Game on the Smart Board.   It was boys against girls this week!  The game ended in tie.  We will need to have a rematch next week.
Thomas representing the boys.

Debate it for 200 points.

A little coaching from the team.

Sometimes we just have fun!  Third graders helping their preschool buddies
write about the preschool trip to the Apple Orchard and being silly at lunch!

Teamwork!

Emma Cait carefully recording details of the field trip.

Meredith and Emma helping their buddy add photos of the trip to her journal.

Sophia helping her buddy with her illustration.

Holly and the sisters!

Luke totally focused on writing what is buddy is dictating.

A few happy third graders at lunch time!

Third Graders Get Their Recorders!

A highlight of third grade music class is learning to play the recorder.  Students were given
recorders last Tuesday.  As students pass different levels on their recorders, they will receive
their recorder belts.  Soon, your child will bring his/her recorder home to practice!  Here is a look
      into music class!

We completed our addition and subtraction unit of large numbers and have started our multiplication
unit!  Students have been working hard on their math facts.  The goal is for third graders to be fluent
with their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts by the end of third grader.  We make time to practice math facts each day at school.  I encourage your child to spent 10 minutes each evening reviewing math facts at home.

Natalie and Sophia quizzing each other on math facts.

Thomas working on his 4s!  "What we have to know division too!"

Luke studying away.

Jameson and Phoenix quizzing each other.

It is fun to jump rope to math facts!
We finished our first read aloud, Danny the Champion of the World.   We have started a new unit on
Character and are reading Wonder as a whole class.

Totally focused on writing!
Ethan hard at work on his book summary!

It was fun to see so many third grade families at the Open House.  The third grades loved sharing their work with family members!  Thank you for taking the time to attend the Open House.  We
have started our word work.  Your third grader has spelling words to study.  They will be bringing
home spelling words every other week.  I hope everyone has a great week.  Please email or call with any questions or concerns.
Third grade is a lot of work.

This is my narrative about Green Peppers.

We have to record our reading everyday!

"Wow!  You have been working hard."

Open House on Thursday Night, 6:00-7:00

Third graders have been working very hard to publish their first Narrative Writing Piece.
We are hoping to have them done for Open House on September 24.  On Friday, we got
so involved in writing that we forgot about snack.  When we looked at the clock, we were
20 minutes late.  No worries, Gay saved our snacks and let us come late!

Phoenix writing about the Cliff Hanger at the Great Escape.
Can you guess what Luke's narrative is about?
Hint...it has something to do with fishing!

Emma Cait writing about visiting her Grandfather's shop.

Holly writing about going on a picnic at a park.

Ethan writing about going on roller coaster with his sister.

Thomas writing about an "epic prank" he played on his Uncle Henry.
Addison writing about taking her visiting Grandmother out on a boat ride.
Students hard at working writing on the computers.

We having been learning about geography and current events with our weekly Scholastic
News.  We learned about how teamwork helped the nation's leaders in writing the
constitution.  Did you know that Constitution Day was on September 17?

Ethan and Meredith partner reading.
Natalie and Luke focused on their reading.

Emma and Holly reading together.

Thomas and Jameson working hard.

In math, we did a listen and compare dyad to share multiple ways to solve addition problems.
Students are using their understanding of number and place value to solve math problems prior
to being taught the standard algorithms.  Look at all the ways the third graders solved one
        addition problem!

We also spent time finishing our Hopes and Dreams.  We can't wait for you to see them at
       Open House.

Third Graders Hopes and Dreams for the 2015-2016  school year.

Somehow, we still found time to continue to build our reading stamina and engagement.  We will
be choosing Book Club Books this week and starting a new literacy unit centered around character.
